PLN Themes

Explore the video provided and reflect on the themes of a PLN in a professional capacity.

The guest speaker for the video provided is Brad Baker, who is a Principal of the North Vancouver School District (Miller 2021). He talks about his learning network includes not only his story and ideas but also his family’s story. In a previous talk, he had discussed how his father had survived residential schools. I completely agree with both Brad and Jesse on how the Indigenous community has gained traction through social media. It really has given the community a unique voice and a lot of information to everyone who didn’t have a lot of ideas about the community. Brad mentions a very great point when he says “information with a second or third or later hands generally starts to lose its meaning very quickly”. This really struck me as a very true idea right now. Social media has given the community the to tell everyone their stories first hand and the right information about themselves.

Which social media platforms are beneficial in education?

Social media platforms are a very controversial topic in education. However, there are lots of platforms which when used for the right reasons are very much beneficial to everyone in the education system. YouTube, Twitter, Reddit are very important in education where students learn a lot from the content (videos, thoughts, images, ideas) in the platforms. Moreover, they also learn and understand what other people think about those topics on the platforms which helps to form their own ideas and thoughts. Facebook Messenger is getting a lot of attraction recently as it’s very easy for everyone in today’s education field to communicate with each other. I have personally used Messenger a lot of times in my 4 years of university.

Consider the equality that exists when all have the same platform to engage community dialogues.

The equality that exists when we all have the same platform to engage in community dialogues is the right to discuss and voice your opinions. Anyone can add to the community dialogue if they have a strong opinion about anything they see or read on the platform. The platform gives everyone a lot of freedom in this way where they get to share their ideas and hear others as well.
