What are the benefits of a diverse and inclusive PLN in social media sharing that understands where you are coming from with messaging that impacts the community?
It is very crucial to have a diverse and inclusive PLN in social media for all individuals as this provides a sense of belonging for anyone in the world. One’s digital identity on social media is a sense of who they are and represent their community where they come from. There are lots of benefits to this for everyone as they come to explore different kinds of culture and community compared to their own and come across new ideas. People from all the different communities respect your opinions and provide you with more ideas than you are used to. Social media is a great platform for everyone in today’s world to raise awareness and support any social issues. This has been very relevant to us in the past year after when COVID struck. The whole world is relying on their PLN and on their virtual network to talk to others and support others.
We know all of these benefits are true from the interview with Markiel Simpson. He works at BC Housing but along with that he is very active in the community and stands up for lots of issues regarding race and helping with issues like including Canadian Black history in the school curriculum which is a very important thing in my opinion. Markiel emphasizes the fact that it’s very crucial to network with all types of different people in our PLN. He mentioned many times how it has helped him to grow and have more engagement in the community. He talks about how he found his niche in Twitter, and how he raises awareness using two particular hashtags – #strongertogeter and #togetherwerise. Lots of other influential people in his PLN do retweet and use his hashtag to support his causes and make all PLN’s aware of the issue. I believe this is the biggest benefit of PLN in community engagement where we evoke change using small things and keeping in touch with different people in our PLN.
